HLA Leadership History
Past PresidentsBrowse the individuals who have served as President of the Hawaiʻi Library Association, organized by era. Use the accordions to expand the lists. Included below is the year that each President officially began their work with HLA as Vice-President/President-Elect. For most, their term as President began the following year. For example, Sunyeen Pai was elected as Vice-President/President-Elect in 2022, began that term in 2023, and completed her term as President during the 2024 calendar year. This is the case as far back as 1941–1943, when the current multi-term HLA Vice-President > President structure was put into place. The 3-year term, with the President also serving an additional year on the Board as Past President, was not instituted until the mid-1990s.
